3 Things You Shouldn't Do If You Want to Use Extension Cords Safely

Hello and welcome to my blog! I'm Marlene Washington and I am what my friends often call a gift psychic. I'm not actually a psychic, but I have a knack for guessing exactly what my friends would love to see appear under the Christmas tree. I spend so much time perusing both online and offline stores that I can think of the perfect gift for anyone on my list. Around Christmas dinner, my family unanimously decided that I shouldn't keep my shopping secrets to myself, so I decided to share them with the whole world through my weblog. Please enjoy!

3 Things You Shouldn't Do If You Want to Use Extension Cords Safely

There are many uses for extension cords. You may need to use one to bring power outdoors when working with power tools, or you might need one so that you can extend the length of the cord for one of your electronic devices. Regardless of why you want to use one, you probably want to make sure that you use it safely. These are a few things that you should not do if you are focused on extension cord safety.

1. Using the Wrong Extension Cord for the Job

When buying extension cords, you'll want to make sure that you are choosing the right cord for the job. For example, some extension cords are only safe for indoor use, so if you use one outdoors, you could be at risk if it suddenly starts raining. Along with making sure that you only use outdoor extension cords when working outdoors, you should also make sure that you choose a cord that is the right size. If the cord is too short, you may have to stretch it when using it, which can cause safety issues as well.

2. Plugging Extension Cords Into One Another

Another thing that you should avoid when using an extension cord is plugging one cord into another. Extension cords aren't meant to be extended in this way. Instead, consider buying a longer extension cord so that you can use it safely.

3. Using Extension Cords That Are Damaged

Extension cords that are in good condition are generally safe when they are used properly. However, as extension cords get used a lot, they can begin to wear out. If your extension cord's cover is damaged and the wires are showing, for example, it is important to discontinue use as soon as possible. Do not use electrical tape to cover up wires that are showing or to attempt to put an extension cord back together. Once an extension cord is worn out, it's safest to replace it.

As you can see, there are a few things that you should not do when working with extension cords if you want to stay safe. As long as you avoid these things, however, you should not have anything to worry about. Just make sure that you buy good-quality extension cords and that you use them for their intended purposes so that you can take advantage of their handiness without putting yourself or someone else at risk.
